Mat Rommel is a Partner and co-Founder of Rommel & Alderman Consulting based out of Los Angeles, CA.

Mat brings over a decade of professional services experience with a focus in delivering strategy, technology, and operations solutions to the energy industry and physical asset owners. Mat established R&A Consulting in 2022 after experience standing-up and leading asset management-focused consulting practices at three global consultancies (PwC, Deloitte, and Alvarez & Marsal). Mat’s new venture enables him to directly serve his clients with his unique industry experience with a more flexible platform.

Mat focuses on bringing a portfolio of energy and infrastructure clients tailored solutions that enable them to harness the power of data. He provides them with technical advisory services around programmatics, resource optimization, and digital technology to drive bottom line results. He brings leading experience in assessing asset management operations and driving digital technologies and strategy solutions into traditional asset management frameworks across multiple industries. His previous experiences include leveraging innovative data collection (e.g., remote sensing) and storing (e.g., cloud), analyzing (e.g., digital workflow and analytics), and visualizing digital data forms (e.g., GIS, dashboards, digital twins) to transform businesses by increasing ROI, safety, operational efficiency, and data quality.

He has spoken at multiple industry events including 2021 Energy, Drone, and Robotics Summit Scaling Effective Unmanned Programs for Utilities panel, California Public Utility Commission’s 2019 Wildfire Tech Summit where he was asked to moderate the panel entitled Aerial Patrols: Best Practices in Data Gathering & Analysis for Utility Vegetation Management and Asset Integrity, Airwork’s 2019 and 2020 Commercial Industry Trends Panels, AUVSI Xponential 2020 where he was asked to moderate the panel Effective UAS Use Today and Tomorrow, and presented at International Security Conference East’s 2018 Unmanned Security Expo

Mathew holds a J.D. from Syracuse University’s College of Law, an M.A. in International Relations from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School, a B.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and an Executive Certificate in Counterterrorism studies from the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel. He is trained as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.

Mat is energized by supporting real-world impact and others who are passionate about what they do and taking it to the next level. He enjoys checking new destinations off on his family’s travel roadmap, learning new things, and staying active through sports, workouts, and the outdoors.

Experience Highlights

  • Across 3+ years, served as Executive strategist and thought partner to standup, operationalize, manage and optimize a leading US end-to-end digital asset management program that had an annual budget of $40M+ and digitized 200k+ assets during each annual cycle.

  • Led project to establish a large Midwest utility’s foundational UAS program across five areas: governance, organizational design, value analysis, operations, and data/technology through strategy setting, analysis, and capability development services.

  • At SVP request, developed the program management strategy and tools, technology strategy and architecture, and operationalized scaled data collection for novel asset management LiDAR program. Identified use cases, shared services, and program synergies to optimize program ROI.

  • At C-suite request, led facilitation for Asset Management of the Future workshops for large utility client that included EVP, SVP, CIO, CRO, VPs, and Directors; yielded digital platform roadmap. Later supported integration of enterprise AI/ML roadmap.

  • Led team that managed UAS field operations for large utility client to include standard flight planning, image capture, reporting, and safety monitoring; at its height 100+ UAS crews were operational. Team also provided helicopter data collection project management.

  • Led creation of standard aerial image capture standards to enable data integrity for client and universal vendor requirement adherence; applied solutions to ground image capture enabling augmented reality image capture solution.

  • Led team that successfully facilitated 12+ pilots demonstrating beyond visual line of sight and remote inspection capabilities of 500+ miles for electric utility emergency response.

  • Benchmarked 12+ utility companies and developed corresponding report with trends analyzed and reported.

  • Operationalized three automation use cases (remote management, machine learning for anomalies, and vegetation management) for large utility company.

  • Supported technology services company with business optimization including operating model refinement, strategic plan roadmap, and profitability through internal and external strategy.

  • Consulted for global oil and gas company across more than a dozen business units and two continents on UAS integration, use case selection, and technology selection.
